GEORGIAN PSALMODY 1
The Gallery Tradition

Papers from the First International Conference organised by The Colchester Institute

Edited by Christopher Turner

This lively set of papers covers a wide range of issues and academic viewpoints. Contributors include Peter Holman (introduction), Nicholas Temperley (keynote address), Gordon Ashman, Mike Bailey, Ken Baddley, Fenella Bazin, Sally Drage, James Forsyth, Vic Gammon, Ian Russell, Dave Townsend, Christopher Turner and Gillian Warson.

The book was published in association with Anglia Polytechnic University. This is the second edition; the first edition was entitled The Gallery Tradition: Aspects of Georgian Psalmody.

[The] west gallery psalm tradition deserves the quality of scholarship and care invested in the volume which admirably reflects the energy and enthusiasm of the Georgian psalmodists themselves.

GEORGIAN PSALMODY 2
The Interaction Between Urban and Rural Practice

Papers from the Second International Conference organised by The Colchester Institute

Edited by Christopher Turner

With an introduction by Christopher Turner and keynote address by Nicholas Temperley, this set of papers includes studies of musicians, manuscripts, instruments and area surveys, and tackles the often controversial topic of performance practice. The papers are by Fenella Bazin, Alan D. Dodge, Sally Drage, James Forsyth, Peter Holman, Helen Mitcham and Chris White, Arlie Prokop, Francis Roads, Winifrid Stokes, Christopher Turner, Gillian Ward Russell, and Gillian Warson.

In my view these two events have established the academic study of country psalmody on a firm basis.

EDWARD MILLER
The Psalms of David

(facsimile of 1790 edition)

Edward Miller's Psalms of David (1790) is described by Nicholas Temperley as 'a landmark' in the historical introduction to the Hymn Tune Index (vol. 1, p. 13). It spawned many imitators and was influential in the movement to reform ('improve') psalm singing. This facsimile is of the first edition, from two copies kindly loaned to SG Publishing for this purpose.

It has a splendid introduction, followed by about 30 detailed pages of subscribers, then two sets of music. The first set (pp. 1-118) gives three psalm tunes and words for each Sunday and the main festivals and fasts throughout the church year, arranged for organ accompaniment. The second set (pp. 119-142) includes each tune used in the first part, but arranged for three or four voice parts -- Miller hoped this would be of use to country choirs where there was no organ.

The book includes the original of the present version of 'Rockingham', plus the earliest known printed version of some fifteen or so others (Miller used each tune several times, sometimes in variant forms) (see Temperley, HTI, vol. 1, pp. 290-1, under MillEPD a).

SAMUEL WEBBE
A Collection of Motetts or Antiphons

(early reprint of 1792 edition)

Towards the end of the eighteenth century, the pressure on Roman Catholics began to ease a little. This book was published at this time, the compositions having been 'eagerly sought after, for both Public and private use', 'being well adapted to the Powers of a small Choir' as the advertisement following the title page makes clear.

The book includes 43 pieces, all in Latin, 'Calculated for the more Solemn Parts of Divine Worship'. Hymns (for example, Adeste Fideles and a lively easter hymn), chants, canticles, anthems, versicles and responses (including a beautiful setting for Complin) all appear, arranged 'for 1, 2, 3 and 4 Voices or Chorus' with organ accompaniment.
